Things To Do in Downtown Los Angeles When You're on Jury Duty
"Combined with water, lye heats to over two hundred degrees, and as it heats it burns into the back of my hand, and Tyler places his fingers of one hand over my fingers, our hands spread on the lap of my bloodstained pants, and Tyler says to pay attention because this is the greatest moment of my life."
So I'm on jury duty for awhile, and it takes me to downtown LA, specifically the criminal courts building. If you ever saw Snoop Dogg on trial, that's where it was at. There's a lot of down-time related to jury duty, so I've compiled a short list of cool things to do while downtown.
1. Read Fight Club by Chuck Palahniuk.
2. Pershing Squre. The closest thing to a "central park" that downtown has to offer, it has this pool that's fifty yards in diameter. The only thing that is pool is basically good for is pigeon drinking. And bathing. So about a hundred of them just hang out there. Free drinks, free bath. All these pigeons figure, why not? They all hang out, and that's why Pershing Square is covered in bird crap. It's everywhere. All these pigeons milling around. And their crap. Once in awhile, one of the pigeons gets spooked and takes off. All of his buddies follow. Then you have a hundred pigeons flying in circles above Pershing Square, looking for a place to land, fleeing for a reason they don't know. And there's a temporary ice rink that's melting in the seventy-degree December weather.
3. Grand Central Market. It's a marketplace where they sell fruit and vegetables and all sorts of other food products. No walls, just one big indoor market with a bunch of great places to get lunch. There's a great Chinese cafe that is basically a kitchen surrounded by a counter. Right there in the middle of the marketplace. The market is so crowded, it's like a modern-day scene from Blade Runner.
4. Wandering. Downtown is a heavily Latino section, with stores upon stores of stuff being sold. Stuff. Like clothes and electronics. It's part of LA's culture, this Latino section. And the architecture is just amazing downtown, a lot of old buildings from the thirties and forties. Very ornate and beautiful. There are some incredible marquees too. And skyscrapers.
"Because everything up to now is a story," Tyler says, "and everything after now is a story."
